Ghana defender Abdul Mumin joins Girona on three-year deal

Ghana centre-back Abdul Mumin has joined Girona as a free agent, signing a contract that keeps him at the Spanish club until June 2029.

Ghana defender Abdul Mumin has joined Girona FC on a three-year contract. The 28-year-old centre-back moves to the Spanish club as a free agent and is tied to Girona until June 2029.

Mumin’s contract with Rayo Vallecano has ended, bringing his two-year spell with the Madrid club to a close. He joined Rayo from Portuguese side Vitoria Guimaraes in 2022 after the Spanish club paid €1.50 million for his services.

The Accra-born defender began his football development at the Right to Dream Academy before continuing his career in Europe. He played for Danish clubs HB Koge and FC Nordsjaelland, then moved to Vitoria Guimaraes before establishing himself in Spain.

Mumin made more than 60 official appearances for Rayo and gained experience in La Liga. His time at the club was disrupted by an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered in March 2025, which kept him out for close to a year.

He returned to action last season but made only three appearances for Rayo, totalling 78 minutes and starting once. The return nevertheless helped him regain consideration for Ghana’s national team after a period away from competitive football.

Mumin made his senior Ghana debut in June 2024 and was included in the Black Stars’ squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although he did not play at the tournament. At 1.88 metres, he brings physical strength, aerial ability and competitiveness in defensive duels to a Girona side seeking greater depth in central defence.
