Ghana striker Nathaniel Opoku completes Northampton League Two move

Northampton have signed Ghanaian forward Nathaniel Opoku from Leicester on a contract running until June 2029.

Northampton have completed the signing of Ghanaian centre-forward Nathaniel Opoku from Leicester. The 25-year-old joined the League Two club on 21 August 2026 and has agreed terms through 30 June 2029. No transfer fee has been disclosed.

Opoku moves to Northampton after Leicester’s 2025-26 campaign, which he spent on loan at Newport County. He returned to Leicester on 31 May 2026 before securing a permanent switch at the start of the 2026-27 season.

The forward has not yet played for Northampton in League Two or the EFL Cup. His arrival gives the club another attacking option as they continue their opening campaign with a player who has experience across England’s lower divisions and in Belgium.

Opoku’s time with Leicester began in January 2023, when he joined from Syracuse. Later that month, he was sent on loan to Belgian side OH Leuven and remained there until returning to Leicester at the end of the 2023-24 season.

He then moved to Newport County on loan in September 2025, spending the 2025-26 campaign with the club before going back to Leicester. The Northampton transfer now ends his spell with the Foxes and keeps him in the English professional game.

Born in Accra, Opoku started his senior career in the United States. He joined Ventura County on loan from the LW Blue Raiders in May 2022, moved permanently to the Blue Raiders in August that year and switched to Syracuse at the beginning of 2023. He is listed at 1.83 metres and has a recorded market value of €150,000.
