Ghanaian forward Gideon Otabil joins FC Porto Under-19 on loan
The 18-year-old left-footed forward moves from Maverick SC to Porto’s Under-19 side, with an option for a permanent deal after 2026/27.
Ghanaian forward Gideon Otabil, 18, has joined FC Porto’s Under-19 team on loan from Ghanaian third-tier club Maverick SC. The agreement includes an option for Porto to secure the left-footed attacker permanently after the 2026/27 season.
Otabil has completed the move to Portugal and will begin his time at a club whose Under-19 side has already opened its title defence with a home win over CD Feirense. The transfer gives the teenager an opportunity to continue his development within Porto’s youth structure.
The Ghanaian has made clear that adapting to a new country and football environment will be part of the challenge. He expects to settle by building relationships with his new teammates and has spoken positively about life in the city, including its food.
Porto’s senior team have won three of their last five recorded matches, beating Torreense 1-0, Aston Villa 2-1 and Santa Clara 1-0. Their other two results were a 1-0 defeat away to GIL Vicente and a 3-1 loss at AVS, providing the wider club setting into which Otabil arrives.
His route to Portugal began with performances at several youth tournaments in Ghana. Those displays helped him attract attention and secure opportunities with the national team, while also advancing his long-term ambition of playing for major clubs.
Otabil now wants to repay Porto’s confidence through hard work and consistent performances. He has stressed the importance of treating every match seriously while enjoying his football, and has appealed to the club’s supporters for a warm welcome, saying he thrives in passionate stadium atmospheres.
