Ian Machado Garry announces vegan diet ahead of UFC 330 title fight

Irish contender Ian Machado Garry has partnered with PETA to promote a plant-based diet before his welterweight title bout against Islam Makhachev.

Ian Machado Garry has announced he is a vegan ahead of his UFC 330 welterweight title fight against Islam Makhachev. The 28-year-old Irish contender has partnered with PETA to promote a plant-based lifestyle during the fight week in Philadelphia.

Garry transitioned to a vegan diet five years ago following issues with infections and illness during previous weight cuts. He claims the change has improved his training output, recovery, rest, and weight management. The fighter noted that he has experienced no muscle or soft-tissue injuries during his 11 bouts since adopting the diet.

He credited the plant-based lifestyle with enabling his recent short-notice victories over Shavkat Rakhmonov and Carlos Prates. Garry stated he likely could not have competed against those opponents on seven days' notice before making the switch. He believes his current physical state is at a higher level than when he previously consumed meat.

The announcement has drawn significant criticism from the MMA community online. Fans on social media platforms have reacted negatively to the news, with some expressing a preference for the champion, Makhachev, due to Garry's persona. Some viewers have labeled him the "ultimate UFC villain" following the news.

While some fans have pushed back by comparing him to plant-based fighters Nick and Nate Diaz, the reaction remains largely polarized. PETA's campaign highlights Garry's desire to promote environmental awareness and animal welfare if he secures the title.

Garry, the number one contender, will face Makhachev at the Xfinity Mobile Arena on August 15. A victory would make Garry the first Irish UFC champion since Conor McGregor.
