Islam Makhachev says Usman Nurmagomedov is ready for UFC title

Islam Makhachev believes Usman Nurmagomedov is prepared to compete for a UFC title or a contender match immediately. The reigning welterweight champion expressed this view during the UFC 330 media day in Philadelphia.

Makhachev noted that the PFL lightweight champion has trained with him, Khabib Nurmagomedov, and other teammates since he was young. He described Nurmagomedov as a highly capable fighter with strong wrestling, striking, and grappling abilities. According to Makhachev, Nurmagomedov has performed well in the PFL and is ready to demonstrate his skills within the UFC.

Despite his confidence in Nurmagomedov's readiness, Makhachev suggested the fighter should participate in one more bout before challenging for a championship. He noted that the UFC is a major division and that Nurmagomedov needs to experience the promotion's atmosphere and media presence first. Makhachev mentioned potential opponents for such a debut could include Max Holloway or Arman Tsarukyan.

Makhachev also addressed his upcoming title defense against Ian Machado Garry at UFC 330. While acknowledging Garry's striking and wrestling defense, Makhachev identified certain weaknesses in the Irish fighter's game. He stated that he possesses the tools to defeat Garry and remains confident in his ability to strike with any opponent, citing his previous fights against Dustin Poirier and Alexander Volkanovski.

Regarding the level of competition, Makhachev countered claims made by Garry about the quality of his recent opponents. The champion defended the standing of Charles Oliveira and maintained that his own skill set is distinct from other fighters in the division. Makhachev noted that while he can win through striking, his preferred method for an easy victory is to utilize takedowns and grappling to finish opponents.
