Jackson says Jordan James made Wolves his preferred destination
Wolves technical director Matt Jackson says Jordan James was determined to join the club after an outstanding season at Leicester.
Wolverhampton Wanderers technical director Matt Jackson says Jordan James was determined to join Wolves, despite interest from several other clubs. The 22-year-old midfielder has now moved to Molineux from Rennes after a lengthy process that Jackson believes was justified by the player’s quality.
James was named the Championship Young Player of the Season after making a major individual contribution at Leicester last term. He scored 11 goals from midfield and was regarded as one of the division’s most sought-after young players before Wolves secured his arrival.
Jackson said James’s preference became clear once Rennes had made their decision. The Wolves technical director also praised the player and his agent for maintaining clear communication during the negotiations, while Rennes were described as cooperative as the deal took time to complete.
The new signing can operate in all three positions within the midfield rotation used by head coach Vítor Pereira. Jackson pointed to his energy, proven scoring output and understanding of the league as qualities that could add something different to a young Wolves squad.
James is also viewed as a source of domestic experience. Jackson said Wolves need more players familiar with the demands of a season involving about 45 matches, particularly because long-term Premier League membership does not automatically give a squad that knowledge. James’s time at Leicester, although difficult for the team, was considered valuable preparation for those demands.
Jackson added that James is ambitious, composed and eager to improve. His homegrown status was another positive for Wolves, who believe his development and experience can strengthen the squad while he continues to progress at Molineux.
