John Fashanu apologises to daughter and announces divorce

Former England international John Fashanu has issued a public apology to his daughter, Amal, and announced his intention to divorce his wife, Vivian. The 63-year-old former Wimbledon striker stated that he had been provided with misleading information by Vivian, which led to a rift within the family.

Fashanu used an Instagram statement to address the dispute, admitting that a previous video in which he criticised Amal was a mistake. He explained that he had been listening to the anger of another person rather than his own heart. He expressed regret that the conflict had damaged his relationship with his eldest daughter, whom he said has always held a special place in his life.

The former footballer described Vivian as his soon-to-be ex-wife and accused her of being a liar. He indicated that legal action would be taken against her following his discovery of the truth. Fashanu had previously rejected claims made by Amal earlier this summer, even accusing her of attempting to defame him, but he has now reversed that position.

Fashanu praised Amal for her composure during the disagreement and noted that they are currently working to mend their bond. He stated that he is proud of the woman she has become and noted her perspective that two wrongs do not make a right. He concluded by emphasizing that life is too short for division.

During his professional football career, Fashanu scored over 100 goals for Wimbledon and was part of the squad that won the 1988 FA Cup. While he earned two caps for England in 1989, he later expressed regret regarding his eligibility to play for Nigeria. After retiring from football, he worked as a television presenter and maintained connections to Nigerian football through the Nigeria Football Federation.
