Kabras Sugar beat KCB 15-5 to win Driftwood 7s as race tightens
Kabras Sugar rallied from 5-0 down to beat KCB 15-5 in the Driftwood 7s final, cutting the champions’ circuit lead to two points.
Kabras Sugar overturned a 5-0 half-time deficit to defeat KCB Rugby 15-5 in the Driftwood 7s final, securing their second title in four legs of the 2026 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit. The victory leaves defending champions KCB only two points ahead with two legs remaining.
KCB took the lead shortly before the interval when Festus Shiasi scored a try. Brian Wahinya did not convert, leaving the Bankers with a narrow advantage at the break. Kabras then controlled the second half, with Griffin Chao crossing twice and Kelvin Wekesa adding another try to complete the comeback.
The result also reversed the outcome of the season’s opening final. KCB had beaten Kabras 19-12 in the Prinsloo 7s decider in Nakuru, but the Western Kenya side claimed the rematch when the Driftwood title was at stake.
KCB had needed extra-time drama to reach the final. Menengai Oilers led 5-0 after Beldad Ogeta scored late in their semi-final, only for Shiasi to level the match. Emmanuel Opondo missed the conversion that would have settled it in regulation time, before Vincent Onyala scored in sudden death after KCB won possession from the restart.
Kabras reached the decider with a 19-0 semi-final win over Daystar Falcons. Daystar recovered from that loss to take third place by beating Oilers 21-5, while Uganda Emerging 7s finished fifth after defeating Nondescripts 19-14 on their return to the tournament following a 13-year absence. Malcolm Okello scored all of Uganda’s points.
Kabras collected Ksh150,000 for the title, with KCB receiving Ksh75,000 and Daystar Ksh40,000. The circuit now takes a one-weekend break before the penultimate Embu 7s on September 5-6, followed by the Christie 7s at Nairobi’s RFUEA Grounds on September 12-13.
