Kaze says Orlando Pirates provide ideal MTN8 test for Sekhukhune

Sekhukhune United coach Cedric Kaze believes Orlando Pirates offer the right examination of his squad when the teams meet in the MTN8 on 22 August 2026. The match is the first of three meetings between the clubs over 10 days, with the semi-final followed by the return leg and a Betway Premiership fixture.

Pirates are the reigning champions of both the MTN8 and the Betway Premiership, raising the standard of the challenge for Sekhukhune. Kaze sees the tie as an opportunity to measure his players’ strength, character and depth against the holders.

Sekhukhune have not reached their best level in recent matches, but Kaze’s concern has been eased by their 2-0 victory over Polokwane City. He believes that result gives his team a stronger platform before facing a Pirates side that has also been competitive across its recent fixtures.

Pirates lead the 2026 South African Premier Soccer League table with seven points from three matches. They have won twice and drawn once, scoring six goals and conceding one. Their listed recent results include a 1-0 win over Las Palmas, a 1-1 draw with Cordoba and defeats against Al Suqoor, Al-Ittihad FC and Cadiz.

Kaze has studied the ways opponents have tried to contain Pirates and intends to use a different approach rather than disclose his tactical plan. He has also stressed that Sekhukhune must be able to perform regardless of the conditions or venue.

The surface at Old Peter Mokaba Stadium is another issue for both teams. Kaze said Sekhukhune had already dealt with a difficult pitch at Seshego Stadium in their previous match and will need to accept another demanding playing surface in the MTN8 tie. The clubs’ busy sequence will continue with two cup fixtures and a league meeting in the space of 10 days.
