Kenyan junior stars eye Olympics after Oregon medal success

Kenya's junior athletics contingent returned to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Wednesday night following a successful World Under-20 campaign in Oregon. The team secured a total of 11 medals, consisting of four gold, three silver, and four bronze. This performance placed Kenya second in the overall medal standings behind the United States, who finished with 24 medals, while making Kenya the highest-ranked African nation at the event.

Josephine Sembeyo Mancha secured the women's 1,500m gold with a time of 4:16.73 at Hayward Field. Her victory ended a five-year period without a Kenyan title in that specific event, which last occurred in 2021. The 19-year-old student from AIC Loitoktok Secondary School noted that she had prepared mentally and physically for the high level of competition.

Frankline Kibet also claimed gold in the 5,000m, recording a time of 13:28.27. This victory follows his earlier World Cross Country U20 title won in Tallahassee in January. As he prepares to move from junior to senior competition next year, Kibet expressed his intention to qualify for the upcoming World Championships and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

Joyline Chepkemoi, who earned bronze in the women's 5,000m, also shared ambitions of transitioning her junior success to the senior level. Chepkemoi has previously competed in the 2023 and 2026 World Cross Country Championships, as well as the Africa Under-20 Championships, where she took bronze in the 3,000m.

Barnaba Korir, chair of the Athletics Kenya Youth Development sub-committee, attributed the results to the training camps supported by the government. Korir stated that the focus will now move toward managing the transition of these athletes into senior ranks to ensure they remain competitive for future World Championships and the Los Angeles Olympics.
