Kenyan-linked striker Wilson Waweru signs permanent Wealdstone deal

Wealdstone FC have completed the permanent signing of Wilson Waweru, a striker of Kenyan descent who earned a contract after training with the National League club during the closing weeks of pre-season. The club confirmed the move on Saturday, 15 August 2026, making him immediately available for selection.

Waweru could be involved in Wealdstone’s first home match of the season against Harrogate Town that weekend. His arrival gives the club another attacking option and adds a player with extensive experience in Irish domestic football.

Born in Ireland to Kenyan parents and brought up in Galway, Waweru started at Mervue United before joining the Galway United academy. He made his senior debut for Galway United at 17 and recorded 16 goals in 81 domestic league appearances across five seasons.

A 2023 loan spell at Cobh Ramblers proved productive. Waweru scored 13 times in 30 league matches and helped the club win the Munster Senior Cup. He then moved to Sligo Rovers in the Premier Division in 2024, where he registered nine league goals in 44 appearances over two seasons.

Waweru returned to Cobh Ramblers permanently in 2026 and scored four goals in 20 league games during the first half of the campaign. That form led to interest from Wealdstone and ultimately secured his move to England.

The transfer also has significance for Kenya’s national-team prospects. Waweru’s eligibility to play for the Harambee Stars has prompted interest among Kenyan football supporters, who regard him as a possible future option in attack. He will also link up with fellow Kenyan forward Micah Obiero, giving Wealdstone two players with Kenyan connections.
