Uganda midfielder Mulamba joins US university on sports scholarship

Ugandan midfielder Blanchar Mulamba has joined Gardner Webb University in the United States on a sports and education scholarship. The move places him on a five-year Sports and Kinesiology course while he continues his football development.

Mulamba has already started training with his new university teammates as he prepares for the demands of his academic and sporting programme. He described the opportunity as a major honour and said he intends to apply himself fully to both areas.

The offensive midfielder spent last season with Express Football Club in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League. Before joining Express, he played for Wakiso Giants Football Club, building a reputation for his passing and dribbling ability.

He also featured for Gomba Lions in the Buganda Masaza Cup. His move to the United States gives him a route to continue playing while pursuing higher education, extending a football pathway that has included clubs in Uganda and regional competition.

Gardner Webb University is in North Carolina, near Charlotte, Asheville and Greenville. The private liberal arts institution was established in 1905, initially operating as Boiling Springs High School.

Mulamba becomes the latest Ugandan footballer to take up a sports scholarship at Gardner Webb. His next stage will combine university football with the five-year Sports and Kinesiology programme.
