Binga South Heroes Day tournament declared a success by organisers

Thirteen football teams and 10 netball sides took part in the Binga South Constituency Heroes Day tournament, which organisers have described as a success. Bafana Bafana of Saba, in Ward 13, won the football section and received a kit and trophy.

Redsea from Mupambe Sichimnwali Village finished second, while Shooting Stars of Saba Ward claimed third place. Green Arrows from Lubanda Village completed the leading four teams in the football competition.

Saba Stars, Hot Spears of Chinonge Area and Magumeni of Lusulu were also recognised with cash prizes and footballs. The awards extended beyond the top four and rewarded additional teams for their participation in the tournament.

Organiser Noah Mumpande said the event gave young people a constructive way to mark Heroes Day. He added that the tournament is planned as an annual event, with the organisers aiming to attract more teams and offer larger rewards in future editions.

The programme also included educational activities focused on the dangers of drug and substance abuse and early child marriages. The Zimbabwe Republic Police took part in crime-awareness work, while organisers also promoted government empowerment initiatives in Binga.

Mumpande said substance abuse was affecting young people in the area, citing illicit cheap beer and mbanje as particular concerns. Entertainment alongside the sport came from artists including Lubu Muchesu and a BaTonga dance group promoting local culture. Zambian performer Money Micho was absent because of elections in Zambia.
