Kevin Lerena calls SA Sports Awards nomination a victory for his career
The former WBC bridgerweight champion says recognition matters deeply as he competes with Pieter Coetze and Christiaan Maas for Sportsman of the Year.
At 34, Kevin Lerena views his nomination for the South African Sports Awards as a victory in itself. The former WBC bridgerweight champion says winning Sportsman of the Year would be special, but believes the recognition of his career carries greater importance.
Lerena is shortlisted alongside swimmer Pieter Coetze and golfer Christiaan Maas. He has described the nomination as an honour, particularly because he never expected his achievements to receive attention on such a prominent stage.
The boxer, known as the “KO Kid”, has enjoyed a strong period in his career. In 2025, he became the first South African to successfully defend a WBC title, achieving the feat at home in front of 8,000 fans. He also pointed to the growth of Aquila Boxing Promotions and its role in presenting boxing talent.
Lerena’s latest recognition follows a run of achievements that he says has been made possible by the people around him. His wife, children and sponsors have helped him remain focused on boxing, while the wider support he has received has allowed him to pursue his professional career without distractions.
He is scheduled to return to the ring at the Sandton Convention Centre in November. The event will give the champion another opportunity to compete on home soil as he seeks to add to a period that has already brought a major national boxing milestone.
For Lerena, however, the awards nomination has already delivered a meaningful reward. It places his work alongside leading accomplishments in swimming and golf, while confirming the standing he has built through his achievements in the ring.
