KRU terminates Andrew Amonde's Shujaa coaching role

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) has ended the appointment of Andrew Amonde as the strength and conditioning coach for the Shujaa national sevens team. Amonde received notification of this decision in a letter dated August 9, 2026.

The KRU cited a contractual rule that prevents a national team coach from occupying a similar role at a club. This decision follows Amonde's recent confirmation as the head coach for Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) RFC. He also recently obtained his World Rugby Level II coaching certification.

The application of this rule has drawn comparisons to other coaching arrangements in Kenyan rugby. Carlos Katywa, the head coach of Kabras RFC, currently serves as an assistant coach for the national 15s team and previously worked as the forwards coach for the Kenya Under-20 side. Historically, several national coaches have maintained their club positions or pursued professional careers outside of rugby while serving the national squads.

Amonde was expected to provide technical support to head coach Kevin Wambua and assistant Louis Kisia. His role was intended to strengthen the technical capabilities of the Shujaa bench, which typically consists of a head coach, a strength and conditioning coach, and a team manager. This structure differs from top-tier international sides like the USA, which utilize support staffs of up to 12 members.

Legal precedent exists regarding coaching dismissals in the country. Hezborne Omollo was previously granted Sh2.4 million in damages after his dismissal as the head coach of Shabana FC was found to be unprocedural.
