Kwasi Sibo’s Genclerbirligi move stalls after Niasse arrival
Ghana midfielder Kwasi Sibo is without a club after Genclerbirligi turned to Cheikh Niasse instead of completing his proposed move.
Kwasi Sibo’s proposed move to Genclerbirligi is now unlikely to go ahead, leaving the 28-year-old Ghana midfielder without a club. He had been expected to sign a two-year contract with the Ankara-based Turkish Super Lig side, including an option for a further season.
Sibo had reached a preliminary agreement with Genclerbirligi earlier this month, but the club has changed direction in midfield. Senegal international Cheikh Niasse, 26, has joined on loan from Hellas Verona, with Genclerbirligi holding an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season.
Niasse made 20 Serie A appearances for Verona last season, and his arrival has effectively displaced Sibo from the club’s plans. The Ghanaian had made Genclerbirligi his preferred destination even though he had received more financially attractive offers from other clubs.
Sibo is available after leaving Spanish side Real Oviedo. His recent career has also included SD Amorebieta, Betis Deportivo and Watford, while his listed market value at Real Oviedo was €1.4 million. He moved to Real Oviedo from Amorebieta in 2024/25, having previously joined Amorebieta from Betis Deportivo and Betis Deportivo from Watford.
His form in Spain and involvement with Ghana have maintained interest in his services. Sibo played in all four matches for the Black Stars during their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, and clubs in England, France, Egypt and the Middle East are understood to be monitoring his situation.
With the Genclerbirligi agreement no longer close to completion, Sibo must now assess other options before choosing his next club. The midfielder’s immediate status remains that of a free agent, with no new team listed after his departure from Real Oviedo.
