Madugu blames individual errors for Super Falcons loss to South Africa

Super Falcons head coach Justine Madugu has attributed his team's 2-1 defeat to South Africa to individual errors. The loss in Casablanca, Morocco, means Nigeria has failed to qualify for the FIFA Women's World Cup for the first time since the tournament began in 1991.

Madugu expressed deep regret over the result during the Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) play-off. He stated that while the players showed determination and gave their full effort, mistakes in decision-making and a failure to convert scoring opportunities cost the team the match. The fixture was the final opportunity for the Falcons to secure a place at the Brazil 2027 tournament.

Addressing the nation, the former WAFCON winner offered an apology to Nigerians for the team's inability to reach the World Cup. He noted that losing was not the intention of the squad. Madugu emphasized that he accepts full responsibility for the outcome of the game despite the players' efforts.

While the coach commended the players for their gallant attempts to win, he acknowledged that the inability to capitalize on chances was a primary issue. He described the setback as unprecedented and historic for the Nigerian side.

Madugu concluded by stating that the result is now final and cannot be changed. He maintained that there will be a next time for the team to move forward.
