Jeff Bezos joins Liverpool ownership in £6bn investment deal
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is part of a consortium led by Amit Bhatia that has acquired a 30 per cent stake in Liverpool FC.
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has joined the ownership structure of Liverpool FC as part of a strategic minority investment. Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has agreed to sell approximately 30 per cent of the Premier League club to an investment consortium led by Amit Bhatia. The deal values the club at between £5bn and £6bn.
The consortium, known as 1892 Holdings, includes Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Bezos is investing through his venture capital firm, K5 Sports, which was founded by Bryan Baum. While Bezos will not hold a position on the club's board, Baum and Saverin’s wife, Elaine, are expected to join the expanded board. Subject to regulatory approval, Bhatia is set to become the vice-chairman of the club.
FSG will maintain majority ownership and continue to hold operational control over Liverpool. The investment does not establish a separate transfer budget or change how the club manages the current transfer window. This move follows FSG's 2010 purchase of the club for £300m, a period that saw significant upgrades to training facilities and the stadium, alongside Premier League and Champions League titles.
Liverpool's financial standing has grown alongside its valuation. The club reported record revenues of £703m for the 2024-25 financial year and was ranked by Deloitte as the highest-earning side in the Premier League in January. At the current valuation, the 30 per cent stake held by the consortium is worth more than £1.5bn.
FSG stated that the partnership aims to integrate expertise from the technology, investment, and global business sectors, particularly within Asia and India. This marks the first confirmed sports ownership investment for Bezos. The transaction arrives as some supporters have raised questions regarding the nature of the investment and the terms provided to the new consortium.
