Malawi host Rwanda and Zambia in 2026 men’s T20I tri-series
Blantyre stages a three-team men’s T20I series from 11-16 August, with Malawi, Rwanda and Zambia competing before a final.
Malawi will host Rwanda and Zambia in a men’s T20I tri-series at the TCA Oval in Blantyre from 11 to 16 August, with the visiting teams now in the city. The hosts will open the competition against Zambia in the first men’s T20I meeting between the two countries.
Each team will play the others three times in the round-robin stage. The top two sides will then meet in the final on 16 August, giving every team several opportunities to recover from a poor result and build momentum before the title match. Malawi will also be pursuing ICC ranking points in a rare run of competitive international cricket on home soil.
Malawi’s recent progress includes a three-run victory over Kenya in the 2025 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Regional Final. Malawi made 130/4 before restricting Kenya to 127. Sami Sohail and Moazzam Baig are among the experienced players expected to provide the hosts with knowledge gained from previous regional qualification campaigns.
Sohail scored 64 from 46 balls in Malawi’s 93-run win over Lesotho during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Qualifier. Baig contributed with wickets and runs in the subsequent 25-run victory against Ghana. Those results form part of a wider improvement in Malawi’s men’s programme.
Rwanda arrive with the strongest recent qualification record of the three teams. They won all six matches in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Sub-Regional Qualifier A, defeating Kenya, Botswana, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali and Sierra Leone. The campaign also secured Rwanda a place in the next stage of the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup qualification process alongside Kenya.
Hamza Khan was Rwanda’s standout batter in that campaign, making 164 from 65 balls against Côte d’Ivoire. The score ranks among the highest individual totals in men’s T20 cricket history and gives Malawi’s bowlers a major threat to manage. Rwanda have also played in Blantyre before, facing Kenya there during qualification.
The opening Malawi-Zambia fixture carries its own significance because it creates a new international contest in the format. Malawi’s meeting with Rwanda could then become a key test of whether the hosts’ home advantage and recent improvement can withstand Rwanda’s outstanding qualification form.
