Matt Renshaw set for Australia Test return after nine-wicket loss

Matt Renshaw will return for Australia in the second Test against the Tigers after their nine-wicket defeat in Darwin last week.

Australia were beaten by nine wickets in the first Test in Darwin, and Matt Renshaw has been recalled for the second match against the Tigers. The 30-year-old has played 14 Tests, with his most recent appearance coming in February 2023.

Renshaw replaces the dropped Jake Weatherald and is expected to open alongside Travis Head when the second Test begins in Mackay on Saturday. His return comes after a strong Sheffield Shield campaign for Queensland, where he made three centuries last season.

Alex Carey said Renshaw is in a better mental and cricketing position than during his earlier international opportunities. The wicketkeeper believes Renshaw’s experience, including recent involvement in Australia’s white-ball squad, has helped him understand the demands of international cricket.

Carey also pointed to Renshaw’s development as an opener. His recent domestic cricket has shown an ability to combine attacking strokes with defensive discipline, while his three hundreds for Queensland provided evidence that he can score heavily in different conditions.

Australia now trail after the opening Test and need a response in Mackay to prevent the Tigers from extending their advantage in the series. Carey expects the squad to draw on its previous record of responding when placed under pressure, with the players having reviewed the defeat during and after the match.

The second Test will also mark Carey’s 50th appearance in the format. He has been Australia’s first-choice wicketkeeper since making his Test debut against England in 2021, and will share the top-order spotlight with Renshaw as Australia seek to recover from their unexpected loss.
