Mbule named MOTM on debut as Zakho win 1-0 in Iraq Stars League

Sipho Mbule was named Man of the Match on his debut as Zakho SC defeated Ghaz Al-Shamal SC 1-0 in the Iraq Stars League. The victory lifted Zakho into third place, level on points with second-placed Diyala SC and behind leaders Al Naft SC.

The South African midfielder started his Zakho career with the individual award after joining the Iraqi club as its latest signing. His debut came in a match decided by a single goal, giving Zakho an important early position near the top of the league standings.

Mbule arrived in Iraq after Orlando Pirates decided not to extend his contract for another year. Zakho announced the 28-year-old’s arrival in June 2026, following his departure from the Johannesburg club.

The move came after one season with Pirates, where Mbule made 23 appearances. He was used most regularly during the first half of that campaign and was recalled to the Bafana Bafana squad during that period.

His involvement reduced during the second half of the season, and Pirates subsequently confirmed that he would leave when his contract ended. Before joining the Buccaneers, Mbule had been with Sekhukhune United and had also come through the SuperSport United academy.

Despite his limited second-half game time, Mbule was part of the Pirates side that won the first Betway Premiership title in 14 years. He also collected the MTN8 and Carling Knockout Cup during his spell with the club.

The performance against Ghaz Al-Shamal gives Mbule a positive start as he seeks to rebuild his form in Iraq. His longer-term aim is to return to consideration for South Africa, having previously been brought back into the national-team setup during his first campaign at Pirates.
