Zak Vyner seeks fresh Wrexham start after injury-hit first season

Zak Vyner, 29, is treating the upcoming Championship season as a new beginning after injuries limited his first campaign with Wrexham. The Harambee Stars defender joined the Welsh club from Bristol City during the 2025-26 winter transfer window.

Vyner arrived at the Racecourse Ground with a toe problem and later suffered a hamstring injury after earning a place in Phil Parkinson’s starting side. The second setback ruled him out of Wrexham’s final five matches of the season.

His adaptation was also complicated by the role he was asked to play. With Ben Sheaf and Matty James sidelined in midfield and George Dobson suspended, Vyner was used in an emergency central-midfield position despite being primarily a defender.

That situation has changed during pre-season. Vyner has been working in his preferred position as part of a back three, giving him the chance to rebuild his fitness and settle more fully into the squad after an interrupted introduction to the club.

The centre-back role is where Vyner feels most effective, and he believes a longer run there will allow him to produce his strongest football for Wrexham. He remains prepared to follow Parkinson’s instructions wherever he is needed, including in midfield or further forward, but his priority is to establish himself in defence.

Completing a full pre-season has also helped Vyner become more familiar with his teammates and the wider demands of life at the club. With the injury problems of his first months behind him, he is now aiming to make a sustained contribution when Wrexham begin the new Championship campaign.
