Medeama set CAF Champions League group-stage target, Tanko says
Ghana champions Medeama are aiming to reach the CAF Champions League group stage and progress further under coach Ibrahim Tanko.
Medeama, champions of Ghana’s 2025/26 Premier League season, are targeting qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage. Coach Ibrahim Tanko has also made clear that the club wants to progress beyond that stage on its return to Africa’s leading club competition.
Tanko has urged a measured approach, with Medeama planning to deal with the campaign one match at a time. The Ghanaian champions face a demanding opening test against TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the first preliminary round.
Medeama will host the first leg at TNA Park on 5 September before travelling to DR Congo for the return on 13 September. Their ambitions will depend on overcoming the two-time African champions across the tie and securing a place in the next phase.
The continental challenge comes after Medeama finished top of the Ghana Premier League in 2025/26. That title earned the Yellow and Mauve their place as Ghana’s representatives in the CAF Champions League and gives the club a route back onto the continent’s biggest club stage.
Medeama’s recent domestic form has been mixed. They have won three of their last five matches, beating Basake Holy Stars 2-1, Hearts U21 5-2 and Basake Holy Stars 1-0, while defeats by Hearts of Oak and Berekum Chelsea have interrupted that run.
The results underline the need for Medeama to improve their consistency before facing Mazembe. Tanko’s stated objective extends beyond simply taking part, with the club seeking to turn its league success into a sustained continental campaign.
