Mikel Obi backs Andre Ayew as a potential force in Ghana football
Former Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi says Andre Ayew could help drive meaningful change in Ghana football if he enters administration.
Former Nigeria midfielder John Mikel Obi believes Andre Ayew could help bring meaningful change to Ghana football if the former captain moves into administration.
Mikel made the comments after arriving at Accra International Airport for a podcast appearance in Ghana. Ayew is expected to join him as a special guest on the programme.
Ayew has been linked with a possible campaign for the presidency of the Ghana Football Association. The former Black Stars captain has also become more visible in Ghana’s sporting community through appearances at events and support for local teams.
Mikel regards Ayew as one of the leading African players of his generation. Their international careers overlapped, with the pair facing each other on several occasions, and Mikel believes Ayew’s experience could remain valuable after his playing career.
The former Nigeria midfielder placed Ayew alongside prominent Ghanaian figures such as Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan when discussing the country’s football generation. He also described Ayew as a top player and a person capable of making a wider contribution to the game.
Ayew is currently a free agent after spending last season with Dutch club NAC Breda. His possible move into football leadership would therefore come as interest grows around his activities away from the pitch and his potential role in shaping the future of the sport in Ghana.
