Ghana forward Opoku credits manager’s belief for Northampton move

Nathan Opoku says Northampton Town’s manager convinced him to join from Leicester City after outlining how he could influence the League Two side.

Ghana forward Nathan Opoku says Northampton Town manager’s confidence in his ability to contribute was central to his decision to leave Leicester City for the League Two club. Northampton have agreed an undisclosed fee with Leicester and handed the attacker a three-year contract.

Opoku’s choice followed discussions with the manager about his possible role in the team. Those conversations persuaded him that Northampton matched his qualities and offered the right setting for the next stage of his career.

The 25-year-old can play in several attacking positions, giving Northampton another option across the forward line. His pace and flexibility are key parts of what he brings to the squad as he begins his time at the club.

He joins after spending the previous season on loan at Newport County. Opoku made 16 starts for Newport and scored six goals, finishing the campaign as the club’s leading scorer.

That spell gave him further experience in English football and demonstrated his effectiveness in the final third. Northampton have therefore secured a forward with a recent scoring record in the English game, while Opoku has moved to a club where he believes the manager has a clear view of how to use him.

The transfer also gives Opoku the chance to build on his Newport campaign in a permanent setting. His ability to operate in different forward roles broadens Northampton’s attacking choices, while his familiarity with English football should support his transition after moving from Leicester.
