More than 3,000 athletes set for Enugu City International Marathon
More than 3,000 elite, grassroots and fun runners are expected at the second Enugu City International Marathon on August 29, 2026.
More than 3,000 athletes are expected to compete for medals at the second Enugu City International Marathon on August 29, 2026. The field includes elite runners, grassroots competitors and fun participants from Nigeria, other African countries and the diaspora.
The race is being organised by Nilayo Sports Management with the backing of the Enugu State Government. Participants will compete for medals, prize money and recognition as the Coal City prepares for one of its largest sporting events.
Preparations for the Marathon Expo are also nearing completion. The expo will be the designated collection point for runners’ kits and will include activities from event sponsors. It forms part of a week-long programme combining sport, music, wellness and business showcases before race day.
Organisers have completed plans covering security, medical support, hydration and traffic control. Those arrangements are intended to protect participants and spectators while allowing the race to take place across the city.
A world press conference is scheduled for August 28, bringing together organisers, government representatives, elite athletes and sponsors. Final race information, security measures and the complete prize structure are expected to be presented at the event.
The marathon is also being positioned as part of Enugu’s wider sports and tourism development. With entries drawing interest across several categories and from runners outside Nigeria, the 2026 edition will connect competitive racing with the city’s cultural and commercial programme.
