Mourinho explains why he chose Chelsea over Man United in 2013

Jose Mourinho has disclosed that he had originally agreed to become the manager of Manchester United in 2013. After leaving Real Madrid, the Portuguese coach had accepted the role of succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that the agreement was in place following their discussions. Ferguson noted that while Mourinho appeared to be accepting the position, his decision changed within a few hours. The former United boss admitted he felt disappointment when Mourinho ultimately declined the opportunity.

Mourinho explained that his decision to return to Chelsea was based on a prior commitment. He stated that he could not break his word to the London club. He felt a strong emotional connection to Chelsea, noting that his love for a specific club can be more powerful than his love for football.

Following his departure from Real Madrid, Mourinho felt a need to be in an environment where he was loved. While he described the loss of the chance to follow Ferguson as a dramatic moment in his career, he maintained that he had no regrets because the choice was made with his heart.

Mourinho eventually joined Manchester United in 2016 to replace Louis van Gaal. His tenure at the club lasted two and a half years, during which he won the Europa League and the League Cup. He was dismissed from his position in December 2018 after a series of poor results.

His second stint at Chelsea, which began in 2013 after he rejected the United job, resulted in him winning both the Premier League and the League Cup.
