Mourinho rules out Real Madrid move for 17-year-old Yamal

José Mourinho praised Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal but said Real Madrid will not pursue the 17-year-old because his squad already has top players.

José Mourinho has ruled out a move for 17-year-old Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal. The Real Madrid coach praised the teenager’s ability but said his squad already contains the quality he wants.

Mourinho was asked about the possibility of signing Yamal amid rumours of a move from Barcelona to their biggest rivals. He made clear that Real Madrid would not pursue the player, while stressing that he considers the options already available to him the best in the squad.

The Portuguese manager was speaking in an interview with El Chiringuito. His comments were later highlighted by Fabrizio Romano on X, bringing renewed attention to the possibility of Yamal changing clubs despite the rivalry between Barcelona and Madrid.

Yamal has become one of football’s most prominent young players through his performances for Barcelona. He was part of the side that won LaLiga ahead of Real Madrid last season and scored 16 goals in 26 appearances across all competitions.

The winger has also been linked with major individual recognition after helping Spain win the 2026 World Cup. He is regarded as one of the leading candidates for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, adding to the interest surrounding his development and future.

Mourinho’s position indicates that Madrid’s interest, if any, will not lead to an immediate approach. His emphasis was on confidence in the current squad rather than criticism of Yamal, whom he acknowledged as a highly talented player.
