Mvurya signals possible extra Talanta Stadium funding for AFCON

Kenya’s Sports CS Salim Mvurya says Talanta Stadium may need more funding after CAF-recommended design changes for the AFCON venue.

Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has raised the possibility of further funding for Talanta Sports Stadium, whose budget has already risen from about Ksh 35 billion to Ksh 45.85 billion ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. The final cost will depend on technical reviews and adjustments linked to Confederation of African Football requirements.

Mvurya said the scale of the changes had not been settled because the designs and related costings were still being completed. Some work could be covered by the existing variation, but additional public money may be required if the adjustments exceed that provision.

The 60,000-capacity stadium has so far received Ksh 28.97 billion for construction. Once completed, it is projected to be the biggest stadium in East Africa and is expected to host AFCON matches alongside Kasarani Stadium.

A CAF inspection identified several areas requiring attention before Talanta can meet the standards for the continental tournament. These include clearer separation of teams, officials and media, improved spectator movement arrangements, a venue operations centre, stronger broadcast lighting and a backup electricity system.

Work on the main stadium has reached the finishing stage, with sound systems and LED screens undergoing tests. Technical teams are also reviewing proposed changes to the presidential pavilion in consultation with CAF. Mvurya said security improvements included 91 turnstiles, with 60 already installed, while work continued on the skyboxes and other sections.

The possible increase means Talanta’s final price remains uncertain despite the current Ksh 45.85 billion projection. Its readiness for AFCON will depend on the completion of the outstanding technical changes and the remaining construction work, while Kasarani is also set to serve as a tournament venue.
