Netball SA chief plans major Test matches for Proteas

Netball South Africa chief Brooke intends to arrange high-profile Test matches for the Proteas ahead of the 2027 World Cup. The administrator wants to bring leading nations such as England, New Zealand, and Australia to South Africa next year. This strategy aims to host matches in major cities rather than requiring the national team to travel abroad constantly.

South Africa currently holds the fifth position in the world rankings. Brooke believes the team must test itself against these top-tier sides to reduce the gap between the Proteas and the sport's traditional powerhouses. He also advocates for a balanced international schedule that includes matches against teams ranked lower than South Africa, such as Ireland and Scotland.

While seeking elite competition, Brooke confirmed that African rivals like Malawi and Uganda remain important to the federation's plans. He noted that nations including Botswana and Namibia have requested to participate in the SPAR Championships. He stated that these opportunities help improve the talent across the continent and foster African unity in the sport.

To improve competitiveness, the 49-year-old administrator plans to organize more overseas training camps. He wants the Proteas to access better sports science support, elite coaching, and world-class facilities. Brooke acknowledged that South Africa faces challenges because other nations possess superior infrastructure and resources.

Having replaced Modiegi Komane in March, Brooke noted that the role has been more difficult than expected during his first four months. The former 2010 FIFA World Cup organiser said the position carries significant pressure. However, he remains confident that the federation is making progress and building a foundation for the 2027 World Cup.
