Nigeria's Arthur Okonkwo makes four saves in Charlton's 2-1 win
Arthur Okonkwo made four important saves and saw a late West Ham penalty hit the bar as Charlton secured a 2-1 English Championship win.
Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo made four significant saves as Charlton beat West Ham 2-1 away in the English Championship. The 24-year-old helped his new team protect a two-goal advantage before a late penalty miss preserved the result.
Okonkwo had joined Charlton only 48 hours before the match, but he was immediately selected to start. The quick decision placed the newly capped Nigeria international in goal for his first appearance with the club.
Charlton moved 2-0 ahead, with Okonkwo then playing an important role in keeping West Ham from reducing the deficit. His four major stops maintained the visitors' lead for most of the match and gave him a strong start with his new side.
West Ham were awarded a penalty with the final kick of the game. The effort struck the woodwork instead of finding the net, allowing Charlton to leave with a 2-1 victory and denying the hosts a late equaliser.
Okonkwo is on loan at Charlton from Wrexham. His performance came soon after his first Nigeria appearance, having been capped by the Super Eagles during the summer.
The goalkeeper is also expected to be part of Nigeria's squad for the AFCON qualifying matches scheduled for September. His display at West Ham gives him a notable club debut before that international assignment.
