German Cup: Kaiserslautern beat Waldhof 1-0 after fan violence
Kaiserslautern defeated Waldhof Mannheim 1-0 in extra time to reach the next German Cup round after violence injured about 100 people.
Kaiserslautern defeated Waldhof Mannheim 1-0 after extra time in a German Cup first-round match disrupted by serious supporter violence. Ibrahim Kanate scored in the 120th minute, sending Kaiserslautern through to the next round.
The match was stopped for about 30 minutes late in normal time after disorder broke out between rival fans. The two clubs are separated by roughly 50 kilometres and the fixture had been designated high risk because of the long-running hostility between their supporters.
Around 100 people were injured during the unrest, including 35 police officers. Police said 85 people received medical treatment, while eight were taken to hospital for additional care.
The trouble began near the end of regulation time when Kaiserslautern supporters fired flares towards the main stand. Waldhof fans then entered the pitch, prompting police and security personnel to intervene. Officers used physical force to push people back towards the home supporters' area and restore control.
Nearly 1,400 police officers had been deployed at the stadium before kick-off because of the expected security risk. Once the situation had been contained, officials allowed the game to continue, although the disruption extended the contest into extra time.
Neither side scored during the original 90 minutes, but Kanate settled the tie with the final-minute strike of extra time. Kaiserslautern's victory secured progression, while the football was overshadowed by the injuries and disorder surrounding the derby.
