Nyantakyi and Afriyie reunite at Asamoah Gyan’s father’s rites

Former GFA leaders Kwesi Nyantakyi and George Afriyie appeared together at the one-week celebration of Asamoah Gyan’s late father.

Kwesi Nyantakyi and George Afriyie appeared together at the one-week celebration of Asamoah Gyan’s late father, George Gyan Mensah, on Friday, August 21, 2026. The two former Ghana Football Association leaders sat side by side during the ceremony at the New Gbawe Cluster of Schools AstroTurf.

Their joint appearance marked a rare public reunion after their relationship deteriorated following years of working together at the GFA. Afriyie served as Nyantakyi’s vice president when Nyantakyi led the association, but the pair have seldom been seen together since their professional relationship broke down.

Nyantakyi’s time at the head of Ghana football ended after the corruption scandal that affected the sport in 2018. Afriyie later sought to succeed him, contesting the 2019 GFA presidential election before losing to Kurt Okraku. He was then ruled out of the 2023 election after being disqualified from standing.

The ceremony brought together members of Ghana’s football community to stand with Asamoah Gyan and his family after the death of his father. The former Black Stars captain was among the family members receiving visitors at the one-week observance.

GFA president Kurt Okraku, Ghana football legend Abedi Pele and former Black Stars captain Stephen Appiah also attended. Members of the Ayew family were present as well, adding several prominent figures from the national game to the gathering.

The side-by-side presence of Nyantakyi and Afriyie was the most notable football-related moment of the ceremony. It placed two men who once held the GFA’s top two positions together in public for the first time in years, while the football fraternity supported the Gyan family.
