Obisanya says Efunkoya U15 tournament links sports with education
Babatunde Obisanya highlights how the Adegboyega Efunkoya U15 Table Tennis Championship helps young players balance academic studies and sports training.
Babatunde Obisanya has stated that the Adegboyega Efunkoya Sports Foundation aims to help young athletes balance their sporting training with academic pursuits. The chairman of the foundation shared these views during a review of the 7th Adegboyega Efunkoya National U-15 Table Tennis Championship.
The tournament included a two-day clinic held at the Lagos National Stadium in Surulere. This clinic focused on improving tactical approaches, footwork, and strokes, while also teaching physical conditioning and modern training methods. The sessions were designed to prepare youngsters for competitive play and provide them with opportunities to be noticed by national selectors.
Obisanya, a former national team coach and international player, noted that the championship has been a source of talent for Nigeria's national squads. He cited Matthew Kuti as a notable example, noting that Kuti was identified during the first edition of the tournament and has since become a vital part of the senior national team. Kuti is also the current reigning under-19 champion in Africa.
Other players identified through the competition include Khadijat Musa and the Ayoola siblings, Umar, Usman, and Kabirat. All four are currently members of the Nigerian junior national teams. Obisanya indicated that the latest edition of the championship has also produced more future national champions.
The chairman expressed gratitude for the support received from administrators, enthusiasts, and former players living abroad. He stated that the foundation intends to maintain the legacy of Dr. Adegboyega Efunkoya by ensuring players pursue education alongside their sports. The foundation remains committed to providing educational support for players who show excellence.
