Orlando Pirates back Sebastian Pedersen ahead of 2026 PSL return

Orlando Pirates are backing Sebastian Pedersen as the Norwegian forward settles into South African football. The Buccaneers lead the 2026 South African Premier Soccer League with seven points from three matches, having won two and drawn one with a 6-1 goal record.

Pedersen made his first appearance in the PSL during Pirates’ MTN8 semi-final win over Sekhukhune United, also known as Babina Noko. He found positions from which he could threaten goal, and his willingness to make an immediate contribution pleased the club’s coach, Ouaddou.

The coach has also stressed that the forward will need time to adjust. Pedersen arrived with a strong scoring record from Norway, but the PSL brings different demands, including its pace, structure and physical intensity. Pirates are working with him to help him understand the team’s approach and settle into his new surroundings.

Ouaddou believes Pedersen can become an important player, although the forward still needs to improve his physical condition for the demands of the coach’s system. Greater physical output, in the club’s view, will allow him to show more of his quality once he has adapted.

Pirates’ next league fixture is at home against Sekhukhune United on 25 August. The teams are also due to meet again in the second leg of the MTN8 semi-final, with both matches taking place at the Orlando Amstel Arena. Pirates’ recent five-match sequence includes defeats by Al Suqoor, Al-Ittihad FC and Cadiz, a win over Las Palmas and a draw with Cordoba, making their unbeaten league start particularly important as they prepare for the two meetings with Sekhukhune.
