Osuagwu urges players to follow Paul Onuachu's example

Former Heartland FC head coach Chijioke Osuagwu has identified Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu as a model for Nigerian footballers. Osuagwu stated that Onuachu's decision to recognise the coach who helped him rise from childhood should be a standard for other top players to follow.

The veteran tactician, known as ‘Oburuonu’, shared his thoughts in an audio message released on Thursday night. His comments came following the postponement of a memorial football tournament intended to honour the late Coach Osahon Emokpae. Emokpae was Osuagwu's assistant during their time at the National Grassroots Dream Team.

Osuagwu criticised various stakeholders and club owners who have benefited from the work of coaches at the Nigerian Grassroots Football Federation (NGFF) academy. He noted that while coaches worked out of brotherly love to expose young talent, they often go unrecognised. He specifically mentioned FC Ebedie of Sagamu as an example of a team they helped grow.

The coach expressed frustration that many players, including some who have represented the Super Eagles, fail to acknowledge those who helped them start their careers. He noted that some players act as if they have no connection to their early mentors. He contrasted this with Onuachu, who remembers the impact Osahon Emokpae had on his development.

Osuagwu, who has managed clubs including Abia Warriors, Police Machine, and Stationery Stores, urged the NGFF management to ensure the memorial competition for Emokpae is properly organised. He called for those responsible to avoid a sluggish approach to the matter.

Throughout his career, Osuagwu has worked with several notable figures, including former Super Eagles players Stephen Ayodele Makinwa and Ifeanyi Emeghara at Frankelson United. He also coached Kazeem Ayila at Stores FC of Lagos.
