Otis Poole, Shaikira King, and the mixed 4x100m relay team all secured medals for Great Britain at the World U20 Championships in Oregon.
Great Britain secured three medals on the penultimate day of the World U20 Championships at Hayward Field. Otis Poole, Shaikira King, and the mixed 4x100m relay quartet all reached the podium to complete a successful night for the nation.
Otis Poole earned a bronze medal in the men's high jump, ending a 30-year drought for British athletes in this event at the championships. The Yate & District athlete cleared 2.21m, an equal personal best, to share the height with India's Basant and Algeria's Younes Ayachi. Although Poole reached 2.24m, he lost out on the silver and gold medals to his rivals on countback. Sam James finished fifth in the same final with a jump of 2.17m.
Shaikira King claimed bronze in the women's 800m with a time of 2:03.52. This performance marks the first British medal in this event at the World U20 level since Jess Judd won silver in 2012. Slovenia's Živa Remić won the gold in 2:03.03, while Greece's Ioulianna Roussou took silver in 2:03.08.
The mixed 4x100m relay team of Divine Iheme, Susannah McKenzie, Matthew Ajayi, and Sophie Thomas secured silver by setting a new national record of 41.38. This improved upon the 41.60 they clocked during the heats. The British quartet narrowly beat the USA, who finished in 41.39, while Italy took the gold in 41.21.
Other notable performances at the event included Le'Ezra Brown of the USA, who equalled the world U20 110m hurdles record with 12.72 to win gold. In the women's sprints, Mia Maxwell completed a sprint double by winning the 200m in 22.37. Tate Taylor also achieved a sprint double for the USA, winning the men's 200m in a championship record of 19.83.
