British men break 26-year record for 4x100m silver in Oregon

Divine Iheme and teammates set a European U20 record to secure silver in the men's 4x100m relay at the World Athletics U20 Championships.

Divine Iheme, Jake Odey-Jordan, Ethan Franklin, and James Arminio secured silver in the men's 4x100m relay at the World Athletics U20 Championships. The quartet clocked a time of 38.90 seconds, establishing a new European under-20 record. This performance broke a British record that had remained unbroken since 2000.

The United States team took the gold medal with a world U20 record of 38.16 seconds, consisting of Blake Hamilton, Dillon Mitchell, Kyler Brown, and Tate Taylor. Jamaica finished in third place with a time of 39.01 seconds. For Iheme, the silver marks his second medal of the championships following a silver in the mixed 4x100m relay. At 16 years old, he is now the youngest male medallist in Great Britain's history at this event.

Great Britain added to their medal tally in the women's 4x400m relay, where Caitlin Hadfield, Shiloh Omotosho, Casey Musgrave, and Camiah Bennett earned bronze. Their season's best time of 3:32.08 represents the fourth-fastest mark in British history. The USA won the gold in 3:29.15, while Australia took silver in 3:31.39.

These final day results brought the total medal count for Great Britain and Northern Ireland to six, consisting of two silvers and four bronzes. This is the nation's most successful return from the championships since 2018. The team finished sixth in the overall standings, supported by nine other athletes who secured top-eight finishes.

Other notable performances included Lyla Belshaw finishing eighth in the women's 1500m and James Alexander placing 11th in the men's 1500m. Earlier in the week, the team earned bronze medals through Wyatt Larkins in the hammer, Otis Poole in the high jump, and Shaikira King in the 800m.
