Richie Mo'unga recalled to All Blacks squad for South Africa tour

Richie Mo'unga has been recalled to the All Blacks squad for the upcoming tour of South Africa. The 56-Test flyhalf is scheduled to depart from Christchurch on Thursday to join the team for the rivalry series.

All Blacks coach Dave Rennie selected Mo'unga to replace centre Billy Proctor, who has been ruled out due to injury. Rennie expressed sympathy for Proctor following his strong season and noted the difficult nature of professional rugby. The coach stated that the team wishes Proctor a successful recovery and hopes he will be available for selection during the end-of-year tour.

Mo'unga has not featured for the national side since the 2023 World Cup final against the Springboks. Following a period playing in Japan, he returned to New Zealand and regained eligibility for selection after appearing for Canterbury against Auckland in the NPC on 1 August. He has since featured in two additional matches.

Upon arrival, Mo'unga must integrate into the existing tactical systems and master the technical details to compete for a place in the matchday squad. He joins a group of flyhalves and playmakers that includes Beauden Barrett, Damian McKenzie, Josh Jacomb, and Ruben Love.

Ruben Love is anticipated to start at flyhalf in the first Test against the Springboks at Ellis Park next Saturday. Love's selection follows his performances in the Nations Championship and a recent outing against the Sharks. The All Blacks are scheduled to play the Vodacom Bulls in Pretoria this Saturday.
