Rio Ferdinand backs Ollie Watkins for Man Utd after 2-0 defeat

Manchester United began their campaign with a 2-0 defeat by Hull City, prompting Rio Ferdinand to identify Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins as a signing the club should pursue. The former United defender discussed the recommendation while reviewing the weekend result on his YouTube channel.

Ferdinand’s preferred option comes after United missed the chance to sign Danny Welbeck. The England striker was available during the summer but ultimately joined Chelsea, leaving United without a player Ferdinand believes could have contributed even if he was not a regular starter.

The former defender said Watkins should now be considered, while also questioning whether United have enough room in their budget to complete such a deal. His recommendation reflects the need for an additional attacking option after the defeat to Hull at the start of the season.

United’s loss leaves them with no points from their opening fixture and places greater attention on their recruitment before the transfer window closes. The result also came as manager Michael Carrick faced questions about the squad’s performance, although he rejected suggestions that his players lacked fight.

Joshua Zirkzee is among the United forwards whose future is uncertain. Juventus and Aston Villa have shown interest in the Netherlands striker, with United valuing him at about £40 million. His role has become less secure amid the club’s attacking options, including Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, Bruno Fernandes, Amad Diallo, Patrick Dorgu and the returning Marcus Rashford.

United are also pursuing additions in other areas. Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba is close to becoming Carrick’s fourth summer signing, in a deal reported at £65 million with a possible £5 million in add-ons. After Newcastle resisted selling Lewis Hall, Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde has emerged as another option. Ferdinand nevertheless believes Watkins should be among the club’s priorities, while saying he would regard a top-four finish as a satisfactory outcome.
