Rolly Romero to defend WBA welterweight title against Teofimo

Rolando Romero will defend his WBA welterweight title against former two-division champion Teofimo Lopez on August 22 in Las Vegas.

Rolando “Rolly” Romero, 17-2 with 13 knockouts, will defend his WBA welterweight title against Teofimo Lopez on August 22. Lopez enters the bout with a 22-2 record and 13 knockouts as he seeks to become a three-division world champion.

The fight is scheduled for T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, with live coverage available on DAZN PPV and Prime Video. Romero and Lopez are friends, but that relationship has not prevented them from meeting for a world title.

Romero won the belt in May 2025 after defeating Ryan Garcia. He scored a knockdown in the second round and then used disciplined work and control of the ring to secure the decision. The victory was a major step in the career of a fighter known primarily for his power and unusual attacking angles.

Lopez brings championship experience across two weight divisions. In October 2020, he outboxed Vasiliy Lomachenko, before beating Josh Taylor three years later to claim The Ring and WBO junior-welterweight titles. Lopez made three successful defences before losing a unanimous decision to Shakur Stevenson on January 31, 2026.

That defeat ended Lopez’s run at the top of the junior-welterweight division and set up his attempt to regain momentum against Romero. Lopez is recognised for his athleticism, counterpunching and technical ability, while Romero’s strengths are his aggression and heavy shots.

The stylistic balance gives Lopez the clearer advantage in pure boxing, with his jab, distance control and defensive discipline likely to be central to his approach. Romero’s route rests on applying pressure, creating openings and landing the kind of power punch that changed his fight with Garcia. The winner will leave Las Vegas with the WBA welterweight title, while Lopez will also have the chance to add a third division to his championship record.
