Sanchez stops Gomez in historic 1981 Battle of the Little Giants

Salvador Sanchez stopped Wilfredo Gomez in the eighth round on Aug. 21, 1981, after surviving a fierce opening attack in Las Vegas.

On Aug. 21, 1981, Salvador “Chava” Sanchez stopped Wilfredo “Bazooka” Gomez in the eighth round at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The referee ended the fight after Sanchez dropped Gomez twice, securing one of boxing’s defining contests of the decade.

The bout brought together two champions at the height of their powers and carried the weight of the long Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry. Gomez entered as the more established star, having built a 32-fight knockout streak while dominating the super-bantamweight division. Sanchez, 21, had risen quickly after defeating Danny “Little Red” Lopez and had defended his title six times.

Gomez’s confidence shaped the build-up. He repeatedly mocked Sanchez and predicted a short contest, while Sanchez remained composed and focused on preparation. Gomez also struggled to make the weight, arriving four pounds over the limit before eventually qualifying after time in a sauna.

The opening minute produced a decisive warning. Gomez forced Sanchez into an exchange along the ropes and landed a right hand, but Sanchez answered with a counter right that sent him to the canvas and fractured his left cheekbone. Gomez survived the count, although Sanchez continued attacking until the bell.

Gomez recovered enough to win several rounds through pressure and aggression, creating a fast, punishing contest. Sanchez absorbed his opponent’s hardest punches without appearing shaken, while Gomez’s legs repeatedly looked unsteady and swelling developed around both eyes.

With Gomez’s vision badly affected by the eighth round, he attacked urgently. Sanchez met him with counter left hooks before driving him to the ropes and landing a series of heavy right hands. The final sequence sent Gomez down again. He rose, but the referee judged him unable to continue. Gomez later acknowledged that he had underestimated Sanchez, while Mexican supporters celebrated the victory around the Las Vegas ring.
