
Sangare shines as Brentford beat Tottenham 3-0 in Premier League
Mamadou Sangare marked his Premier League debut with an assist as Brentford defeated Tottenham 3-0, giving Keith Andrews’ side an ideal start.
Mamadou Sangare made an immediate impact on his Premier League debut as Brentford defeated Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 at the Gtech Community Stadium. The £39 million Malian midfielder created the opening goal, helping Brentford begin the season with three points while Tottenham started with a heavy defeat.
Sangare, who joined Brentford from Lens, provided the decisive pass for Keane Lewis-Potter after 12 minutes. The assist capped an assured first appearance and gave the hosts an early advantage against a Tottenham side beginning a new era under Roberto De Zerbi.
Vitaly Janelt extended Brentford’s lead in the 33rd minute. Nigerian defender Michael Kayode added a third shortly after half-time, leaving Tottenham unable to recover. Brentford could have scored again, but Igor Thiago hit the post from a penalty in the 55th minute.
The result is Tottenham’s joint-heaviest opening-day defeat in the Premier League era. Brentford’s victory, meanwhile, puts Keith Andrews’ team on three points after the first round of fixtures and gives them an ideal platform for the campaign.
Sangare’s contribution also placed him among a select group in Brentford’s history. He became only the fifth player to score or assist on his Premier League debut for the club. His performance drew praise from former Brentford defender Ben Mee, who highlighted the midfielder’s energy, quality and attacking intent.
Brentford’s leadership has nevertheless called for more from the new signing. Captain Nathan Collins said Sangare had started well but would be expected to add further goals and tackles, while Andrews praised how quickly he had fitted into an already talented midfield. Sangare said beginning with a win in front of Brentford’s supporters had been important and expressed hope that the team could maintain that momentum.
