Sanni Ahmed warns Fizdale over D’Tigers defence in 2027 qualifiers

Nigeria face three Group E games in the second round of the 2027 FIBA Basketball World Cup African Qualifiers. The fixtures will be played in Radès, Tunisia, against Cameroon on August 27, South Sudan on August 28 and Cape Verde on August 30.

Former D’Tigers coach Sanni Ahmed has warned current head coach David Fizdale that Nigeria’s defensive performance could determine whether they remain in contention. He believes the latest squad is stronger than the group selected for the previous qualifying window, but said improved personnel would not be enough without greater discipline at the defensive end.

Nigeria reached the second phase after winning all three of their matches in the earlier window in Luanda. That run revived their hopes of reaching the 2027 World Cup, but the team now faces a more demanding stage, with first-round results carried into the next phase and every game carrying increased importance.

Fizdale’s 12-man squad includes NBA-experienced players Chimezie Metu and Josh Okogie, while Chima Moneke returns to the team. Ahmed had previously called for Nigeria’s strongest available players to be selected for the second round because of the rise in the standard of opposition.

The former coach’s concern is focused on the quality of the teams Nigeria will face in Tunisia. He believes D’Tigers have enough attacking ability and individual quality to compete, but careless defending could expose them against stronger opponents.

Five African teams will qualify for the 2027 World Cup in Qatar. The top two teams in each second-round group and the best third-placed team will secure places at the global tournament, making Nigeria’s defensive response in Radès central to their qualification campaign.
