Cassiem urges South Africa to step up after 4-1 FIH Hockey World Cup loss

Cassiem says South Africa must improve after a 4-1 defeat by Ireland left the men’s team bottom of Pool C at the FIH Hockey World Cup.

South Africa suffered a 4-1 defeat by Ireland at the FIH Hockey World Cup, leaving the men’s team with two losses from two Pool C matches. Cassiem has called on the side to respond after failing to turn their chances into goals.

South Africa went ahead in the 37th minute when Kenton Melville produced an acrobatic deflection. The lead lasted only five minutes, with Benjamin Walker bringing Ireland level in the 42nd minute.

Ireland then took control through Lee Cole, who scored in the 48th and 55th minutes, before Sam Hyland completed the scoring in the 59th. South Africa’s inability to convert its opportunities proved costly once Ireland moved in front.

Cassiem said the team had created enough chances but lacked the finishing required at this level. He also pointed to the number of new players in the South African setup, saying the occasion had brought added nerves. His message was that the squad needed to handle such moments more effectively.

The defeat leaves South Africa at the bottom of Pool C after the opening round of matches. Australia lead the group on six points, while Ireland and Spain have three points each, leaving South Africa unable to reach the championship phase.

South Africa will instead enter the classification competition for teams placed ninth to 16th once the pool stage is complete. Their final Pool C fixture is against Australia on Thursday, 20 August, at 11:00.

The match also marked a personal milestone for captain Dayaan Cassiem, who earned his 100th international appearance for South Africa in the green and gold. It came a decade after he made his senior debut.
