Schools rugby: Paul Roos defeat Grey College 37-29 at home in Stellenbosch

Paul Roos Gimnasium beat Grey College 37-29 in Stellenbosch, claiming a third straight home win and ending the season with 15 victories.

Paul Roos Gimnasium ended their season with a 37-29 victory over Grey College in Stellenbosch on Saturday, securing a third consecutive home win against their long-standing opponents. The result also reversed last year’s narrow defeat in Bloemfontein.

Grey College held a 14-13 advantage at half-time, but Paul Roos changed the flow of the match after the interval. The Maroon Machine scored five tries in total, with eighthman Gerard Bekker crossing twice.

Bekker’s second try came from a long-range interception and gave Paul Roos a decisive advantage. Blindside Stef de Villiers, left wing Cadynn Samuels and outside centre Jean Hamman also scored as the hosts pulled clear in the second half.

Paul Roos completed the campaign with 15 wins and two losses. Grey College suffered their fifth defeat, having also been beaten by Stellenberg, Nudgee College of Australia, Paarl Gim and Affies.

SACS recorded the biggest Western Cape win of the day, beating Bishops 55-22, while Rondebosch defeated Wynberg 33-29. Bellville won 21-18 against DF Akademie. In the Eastern Cape, Queen’s beat Dale 22-12 to level their series at one win apiece, while Graeme finished with a 54-27 victory over Muir and a season record of 15 wins, one draw and one loss. Grey High defeated Selborne 61-47.

Welkom Gimnasium edged Trio 37-34 in the Free State, with Jim Fouche beating Sentraal 35-25. Noordvaal results included Centurion’s 27-24 win over Potch Gim and Zwartkop’s 45-10 victory against Oos-Moot. The Noordvaal Cup semi-finals, featuring Garsfontein against Waterkloof and Monument against Noordheuwel, are scheduled for Tuesday.
