Scorchers players granted legendary status after WAFCON run

The Football Legends Association has granted legendary status to the Malawi Scorchers players following their performance at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). The recognition follows the team's progression to the tournament final.

Jim Kalua, the Board Chairperson of the Football Legends Association, stated that the players' achievements during the competition qualify them for registration with the association. He noted that the level of competition faced during the tournament justifies this special recognition for the squad.

Kalua also acknowledged the support provided by the Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports toward the advancement of women's football. Additionally, he commended FAM president Fleetwood Haiya and Women’s Football Association president Adelaide Migogo for their roles in developing the women's game in Malawi.

The Scorchers have maintained a consistent run in the tournament, losing only one of their five matches. Their campaign began with a 3-2 win against Nigeria and a 3-1 victory over Egypt. After a 2-1 loss to Zambia, the team progressed through the knockout stages by defeating Ghana 2-1 and overcoming Algeria in the semi-final.

Malawi now prepares to face Cameroon in the WAFCON final on Sunday to compete for the continental title.
