Seven Oguaa Asafo groups set for maiden Afahye football event

Seven Asafo groups from Cape Coast will compete in the maiden Oguaa Afahye football competition from August 31 to September 2, 2026. The three-day tournament will be held at AME Zion School Park near London Bridge in Cape Coast as part of the build-up to the Oguaa Fetu Afahye celebrations.

The participating groups are Bentsir, Anafo, Ntsin, Nkum, Brofomba, Akrampa and Amanful. Each will be represented by a team assembled from its Asafo company, bringing the groups together through football before the festival’s main activities.

The competition is being led and funded by Thomas Hughes Amissah, a Cape Coast native known as “Skilful”. He has provided customised jerseys for all seven participating groups as preparations continue for the event.

The tournament is intended to give the annual celebration an additional sporting element while keeping its focus on Oguaa’s cultural identity. Its organisers also expect the matches to create a space for members of the different Asafo companies, especially young people, to participate in the festival.

Amissah’s stated aim is to use the competition to build stronger links between the groups, encourage interest in Oguaa’s history and traditions, and help younger residents connect with the annual celebration. The football programme will therefore sit alongside the cultural activities rather than replace them, adding a new way for the community to take part in Fetu Afahye.

The event will also provide a shared setting for sport, culture and tradition at the AME Zion School Park. With all seven Asafo companies involved, the inaugural competition will form part of the arrangements leading into the 2026 Oguaa Fetu Afahye.
