Stick backs De Villiers as Boks’ warrior for All Blacks Test

Mzwandile Stick has backed 23-year-old Paul de Villiers to start at openside flank for the Springboks against New Zealand at Ellis Park.

Paul de Villiers, 23, will win his fourth Test cap when the Springboks face New Zealand at Ellis Park on Saturday. Assistant coach Mzwandile Stick believes the young openside is ready to take on the All Blacks and has described him as the kind of fighter South Africa needs for the contest.

De Villiers will start after Rassie Erasmus left Siya Kolisi out of the match-day selection, despite the Springbok captain training with the squad during the week. Stick acknowledged that Kolisi’s absence removes an important leader, but said the team’s earlier decision to give De Villiers opportunities against strong opposition had helped prepare him for this assignment.

The coach praised De Villiers’ composure and understanding of his responsibilities. Stick’s view is that age does not determine leadership within the team: a player who takes responsibility for his role can become a senior figure in that area of the side.

The challenge against New Zealand will be greater than the matches De Villiers has already played. Stick said an All Blacks Test is among the most demanding experiences in a player’s career, but backed the flanker’s character and willingness to meet the physical and tactical demands without retreating.

South Africa have also selected Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu at flyhalf, with Manie Libbok among the replacements. Cobus Wiese has been chosen as lock cover ahead of Franco Mostert and Lood de Jager, both members of the Springboks’ 2023 World Cup-winning squad.

Stick said the coaching staff had held detailed discussions over the 23-man squad, with the All Blacks’ high-speed approach and emphasis on keeping the ball in play shaping their decisions. The Springboks are targeting an 80-minute display rather than relying only on their starting combination, while Zach Porthen and Jan-Hendrik Wessels are expected to provide energy from the bench as New Zealand look to raise the pace late in the match.
