Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi set for Coventry City move

Taiwo Awoniyi is set to leave Nottingham Forest for Coventry City in a permanent transfer after the two clubs reached an agreement. The Nigeria striker has already begun his medical ahead of the move, which is expected to be completed soon.

The transfer would make Awoniyi Coventry’s major signing of the summer as the club prepares for its first Premier League season after winning the English Championship. Frank Lampard’s side have also brought in Amenda Aurele, Caleb Yirenkyi, Carl Rushworth and Nigerian midfielder Frank Onyeka.

Awoniyi was involved in Nottingham Forest’s 2-1 pre-season victory over Bayer Leverkusen three days before the agreement with Coventry. That appearance is expected to be his final outing for Forest, where he has played since joining from Union Berlin in 2022 for €20.5 million.

The 29-year-old made an immediate impact after arriving at Forest, scoring important goals during his first two seasons as the club fought to retain its Premier League status. However, injuries have affected his time in England. He has missed 56 matches for club and country and subsequently lost his place in the Forest attack to Chris Wood and Igor Jesus.

Forest have drawn with Guimaraes and Bournemouth, beaten Blackburn and Notts County, and lost 3-2 at Manchester United in their five most recent listed matches. Their next fixture is a Premier League meeting with Leeds on August 22, 2026.

Awoniyi began his senior European career after joining Liverpool as a teenager, although he never played for the first team because he could not obtain a work permit. Loan spells at FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Mouscron, KAA Gent and Mainz preceded his move to Union Berlin, where he eventually signed permanently. If the Coventry transfer is completed, Ola Aina would be the only Super Eagles player remaining at Nottingham Forest.
